There are different AI we can think of, based on how we will then represent and treat knowledge. Leading paradigms include Symbolic AI and Connectionist AI (McClelland, Rumelhart et al. Both are trying to make machines think and learn, but they take very different paths to get there.

Symbolic AI: Rule-Based Intelligence

Symbolic (also known as Classical) AI assumes that human intelligence can be represented using symbols and rules. It depends on explicit programming and reasoning —the system only knows what humans have told it.

Connectionist AI: Learning from Data
